There are so many ways that one can consider something like happiness.
The dictionary actually defines it as “the state of being happy” Well….that isn’t useful.
It could be finding joy within…
Perhaps achieving a goal or overcoming a challenge…
Maybe it’s as simple as finding out what brings you peace and doing you.
At the end of the day, defining happiness is a uniquely you thing.
A “You’ll know it when you see it”, kind of thing.
So, what makes YOU happy and are you experiencing that right now?
Over time I have found that there is a starting point for a life of happiness and fulfillment.
The starting point can be boiled down to 3 variables within the scope of your control.
When these are aligned You will be happy.
Fail to align them and you will not find fulfillment. You will not be happy.
Let’s start with a 30 second pause and reflection before we get into it.
Can you say that you are happy with your life… the people you’re surrounded by… your career… and the prospect of your future?
Not a yes maybe, but a hard YES or NO.
Do not allow for justification.
Do not rationalize your reflection away.
Simply answer yes or no.
If the answer is not a resounding YES, read on.
Change starts with the belief that change is first possible and that it will be worthwhile.
Variable 1-Connect with your purpose
Studies find that deliberate altruism creates a feedback look that increases generosity and freedom.
Design a life where you and the people and causes closest to you are seen, heard and validated.
Create a living space with a focus on aesthetics. The beauty and order of that space will affect the beauty and order of your life and in turn allow you to do the same for others.
Variable 2-Be Grateful
You will be well served by spending a few moments at the start of each day recounting and expressing what you are thankful for. But don’t let it stop there.
Being aware of all that you’re grateful for is not enough. It is also key to write down all the people, experiences and things that you are grateful for.
Simply writing down three things you are grateful for every day for one month can transform your life by changing your outlook, your mood and the way you interact with others.
Variable 3-Simplify your life
Take time to acknowledge what really matters to you. Are there items, people, tasks in your life that are simply taking up space and time?
Take a moment to acknowledge all that you could do and realize that, perhaps, focusing on only the critical few will allow you to pursue these with more meaning.
You can start by writing down a list of all the things you would like to accomplish and then select only two to three off that list and focus on doing them well.
Note that these three variables, Purpose, Gratefulness and Simplicity are all easily achievable. When you focus on them you will find a greater sense of intrinsic worth. From this happiness will flow.
