How to shine your shoes

Last week we learned how to tie a tie. This week we’ll continue with the dabber gentleman and learn how to shine shoes.

Let’s face it, if you’re putting the time into getting dressed up whether for a wedding or your office job, having a pair of shoes that look good is important. You may not realize it but people notice. A pair of clean and shined shoes can set you apart. You’ll be seen as a man that knows how to take care of himself.

Another benefit is that it is a part of properly maintaining leather shoes or boots. The polish itself helps moisturize and waterproof the leather, lengthening a shoes lifespan.

How To Shine Your Shoes

Shining your shoes is easier than you might think. Below is the way I shine mine. I taught this to my kids and they got it in one try.

Step 1: Cover your work area so you don’t get polish everywhere.

Step 2: Dust off your shoes. You want the shoes to be dirt free for the best polish.

Step 3: Cover the shoe with your polish. Be sure to use the corresponding color. I typically use Kiwi brand which can be purchased from almost everywhere.  In the same area you purchase the polish you should be able to find a polish brush or foam to use in applying. Make sure you get every inch of the shoe.

Step 4: Allow 15 minutes for the polish to dry.

Step 5: Brush off the polish with a horsehair brush, again found near where you purchased the polish. You should be left with a thin film of polish on the shoe when you’re done.

Step 6: At this point you can either repeat steps 3-5 again focusing on the heel and toe or you can use a terry cloth to shine up the shoe. Either way the terry cloth shine is your final step.  Hold the cloth tightly in your hands at each end and quickly wipe the entire shoe. You’ll notice the shine coming through almost immediately.
